2602 Days since retiring July 1, 2005!

In prep for Tomorrow “National Tell a Joke Day"

Did you know that 40% of all blonde typists can type 40 words a min. The rest are all hunt'n'peckers.

Read on and fall sound asleep

I forgot to observe VJ day yesterday. Tonight I found a remarkable video of that day in 1945 on Hawaii. If you are a sentimental old fart who misses that generation terribly do not watch the video (http://vimeo.com/5645171). But do give a thought to the bravery of our warriors today in far off Afghanistan. And pray that war ends soon and they all come home.

Our first daughter sent me a picture of her first daughter on the grounds of her college. I still find it difficult to comprehend how Brooke grew up so fast. Her plans for her education is likely to put her in superb locations for sourcing ideas for a great novel.

Her college is right on the corridor I used to travel when I would attend the Astros Spring Training season. I love that part of Florida. Oh you don’t know which part. The highway connecting Port Orange and Tampa Bay. I have grannie friends that live in Port Orange and one who lived in Sarasota. Judy is somewhere teaching piano to baby angels. I have hopes that Brooke becomes a great and influential author.

Almost 2 weeks ago the dishwasher failed. Only one small green light would flash. The service man has made several trips with no repair and mounting costs for parts. Today I realized I was throwing good money after bad so I told the repairman to cut its throat. I went to Lowes and bought a Model WDT710PAYB Whirlpool dishwasher.

Lowes will haul away the old one and I, Oh Joy, get to install the new one. If this new one lasts as long I will be 84 and probably won’t give a shit when it fails.

Heavy Trash truck came today: result about a fourth of the junk and debris is still in the back yard. The city has a nice racket going. If you put the stuff out too early a cruising cop will write you a lovely ticket for $296. If you don’t set it out early the crew may get supercharged and clear your street up to a week ahead of schedule. It is kinda like being head cheese of a gang of arsonists and also insurance salesman for fire insurance.

Tomorrow is going to be hectic. I have to take first grandson at 5:30 am to his football practice, be on hand to sign for the new dishwasher delivery, take wife to a doctor appointment at 11 am, all the while keeping my eyes open for unused phone booths in case I have to change into “allthingsguy”.

Later in the Manor a shadowy figure will be seen slumped over a strange piece of machinery and muttering curses because the flummox he has does not couple with the gimcrack subassembly ii-XF23c. The gimcrack subassembly does not appear in the user’s guide as it was a late addition on the production line and the manual has not been updated. Rush delivery from a secret facility in Montenegro is available for 32.17 Euros with a guaranteed delivery within 10 days.

Just sayin!

Tres Leches Cake

1 and a half cups All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1/2 cup Unsalted butter
2 cups White sugar (divided)
5 Eggs
1 and a half teaspoon Vanilla extract (divided)
1 cup Milk
Half of a 14-ounce can Sweetened condensed milk
Half of a 12-ounce can Evaporated milk
1/3 cup Liqueur, Frangelico, Brandy or Chambord, for example (optional)
1 and a half cups Heavy (whipping) cream

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.

Sift flour and baking powder together and set aside. Cream the butter and 1 cup of the sugar together until fluffy. Add the eggs and 1/2 teaspoon of the vanilla. Beat well. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, 2 tablespoons at a time, mixing well until blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes.

When cake has finished baking, pierce it in 8 or 10 places with a fork or skewer, and let it cool. Combine the whole milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk and liqueur and pour over the top of the cooled cake. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Whipped Cream Topping: When ready to serve, combine the whipping cream and the remaining 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 cup of sugar, whipping until thick. Spread over top of cake.

Because of the milk in the cake, it is very important that you keep the cake refrigerated until ready to serve.

Serve chilled.
