2317 Days since retiring July 1, 2005!

"The Art of Peace can be summed up like this: True victory is self-victory; let that day arrive quickly! "True victory" means unflinching courage; "self-victory" symbolizes unflagging effort; and "let that day arrive quickly" represents the glorious moment of triumph in the here and now."

Read on and fall sound asleep

A group of people on the internet have been reading “The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. The reading is being directed and annotated by a blogger named Dennis Abrams. The reading has been interesting when couple with a deeper analysis of his language and the mores of the time. One of the other readers published a link to a Google video “The Taming of the Shrew”. It is clear that the play was written for a visual expression. The visual interplay between the characters on stage adds life to the bare words. Until I started going to the Winedale performances and this reading I was unaware of how much fun Shakespeare packed into his comedies. And word play out the wazoo. I actually skipped watching “Big Bang Theory” to read “Shrew”. I was not aware that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had made a movie of “Taming of the Shrew”. Nor was I aware that the movie “Kiss me Kate” was based on this play. Almost 400 years after his death Shakespeare still moves and informs us. Maybe Mark Twain might retain that popularity for so long. I doubt any of the authors I have read will still be read and fresh400 years from now.

Some of my friends from Grannies in Ohio, Iowa, and there abouts have already had snow. I had warned them about letting to cold slip south. But they must have had a short lapse of attention because I woke this morning to cold. It was near about 50 degrees in my backyard at 7am. That is cold enough to cause instant death in a lot of Houstonians. When I drove out to Katy to get my “floaters” checked by Dr. Khawly at 9:30 Katy Fwy (I-10) was near disserted. I had an image of Houstonians huddled around their kitchen ovens wrapped in every piece of clothing they owned, shivering so hard as to nearly crack bones. We are a thin blooded people.

The Retina & Vitreous doctor told me I have very early signs of macrodegeneration and told me to start taking a vitamin mix called Preservision with Lutein. I can get them online for about $0.16 each and at local drugstores for about $0.22 each. Taking two a day of the cheap ones is about $10 per month. I am 70 with a life expectancy of 84. Fourteen years at $120 per year is almost $1700. I think I will start taking them, at least until the next check in May 2012. If the Mayans are right I will only need than for 14 months.

I told the doc that only two things scare me: one is Alzheimer’s and the other is going blind. What I did not say is that apparently I have lost any short term memory. Yesterday I opened a pack of twelve pentil type pencils and put them in a designated coffee cup on my desk. I use them only for ciphering Sudoku puzzles that I print from my computer. The newspaper puzzles I solve with red ball point. Just as I finished the prior paragraph I reached for a pentil. None, nada, zilch! I have spent the last 30 minutes searching my desk. I am the only one home this evening so I cannot blame anyone else. After I gave up the search and dug out another pack of twelve one rolled into existence in the middle of my desktop. I did not see it materialize but it had to have been teleported. Now I have 13 on my desktop and an empty coffee cup. In twelve go and the “free” one is painter taped to my desk calendar.

Gotta stop now to measure my blood pressure, feed Rascal, and snuggle into my recliner. Tomorrow morning I shall call to check on my TV.
